Whale commission

WEB6

Here is my latest finished commission; a Sperm Whale made from blue and white. I was working on this design at Dorset art Weeks then it was snapped up by a fellow artist who visited our venue.

This is the biggest mosaic I’ve created so far at just over 1 m long. It has two ship plates sunk into it and I’ve used pottery found in an old Victorian dump. I’ve used the biggest Spode river boatman for a Jonah’s type figure in the whale’s stomach. There is also a full riverboat in a scene found at the same dump which is on the banks of a river estuary.

The person buying the whale has given me some of his own pottery shard collection which I gone through, picking out some shards that I have been incorporated into the design.

Once the design was finished the process of building it has gone fairly smoothly, it’s just been on a much bigger scale to normal. I have had to use a metal wire to hang it, like my last largish mosaic Broadhurst bouquet of flowers. I’ve also used my new stamp signature on the back with permanent ink which I’m using for my signature from now on.
